Getting Older

My first baby is four years old!

His birthday last year it took him a few weeks to say that he was three and not two.  This year, he just knew.  Up to his birthday he said "I am three almost four.  My birthday is July 21st!"  After his birthday he said "I am four years old!"  No assistance needed.  He just knew.  It is amazing.

Over the past year Owen has grown to be an excellent big brother. Owen started off being very helpful, wanted to change her diapers, feed her, rock her in the swing and on the rocking chair.  Then he hit a point where he was not very nice to Charlotte when she was about seven months old.  This is right around the time she learned to crawl.  Thankfully this phase only lasted about a month and a half.  He went right back to being the helpful, wonderful, big brother.

Owen is still as obsessed as ever about trains.  When I took him to the toy store to buy a birthday present the first thing he went to was the train section.  In addition, Owen loves to build with Lego Duplo blocks, he loves all kinds of hot wheels vehicles, any kind of construction vehicle, and race tracks.  He loves to make and dance to music, as well as read books.

His favorite foods include broccoli, steak, tacos, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, rice, strawberries, and noodles.  He dislikes mashed potatoes, hot dogs, salad, cooked carrots, and cooked peppers. He loves to share whatever he is eating with his sister.  (even if she was too young to have it).  He also would much rather eat what is on his Dad's plate versus what is on mine, even if it is the exact same thing.

Owen routinely goes to the dentist and so far everything looks great.  We schedule our appointments for the same day so he can watch them brush my teeth and it makes him more comfortable when it is his turn. He does a great job brushing his teeth and often asks to do it at random times during the day.  (for a while there he wanted to brush his teeth every time he went potty.)  Owen also loves bath time.  He received a bunch of bath toys for his birthday which makes him want bath time even more. Him and Charlotte bathe together and he often helps wash her up and rinse all of the soap off.  He is also getting better at washing himself up all by himself.  When he is done he cleans up all the toys, drains the water, dries himself off, then grabs clothes to get dressed.  Wont be long until he is getting washed up all on his own.

This fall Owen will be starting pre-school!  He has had a little taste of the class setting when I went back to work part-time this past winter.  He claims to not want to go because he does not want to leave his mom and sister.  True heart-breaker. I fear the first two weeks or so of pre-school will be difficult for him.  It will be a huge adjustment.  He will be waking up earlier, have to leave every day, have a more structured environment, and will be eating lunch on his own.  I am also sad for him to start school.  I cannot imagine what it will be like to not have him at home.  However, I am looking forward to my one on one time with Charlotte.  I am also looking forward to being missed.  When Martin comes home from being out of town for the week, or from even a day at work, Owen runs to Martin and gives lots of kisses and tells him what he did that day/week.  I cannot wait for that.  I cannot wait to hear stories about what he has learned, about new friends, and new experiences.  Owen has a new backpack and lunch box for school and is all ready to start.

I am looking forward to what the next year is going to hold for us and all the new experiences we will have.

We have a One Year Old!

Last week Charlotte turned a year old.  It is still amazing to me to say that.

She continues to nurse a few times a day and while she loves to eat solid food, she also loves her milk.  She sleeps pretty well at night, nursing two to three times.  She doesn't usually actually wake up to nurse, as she lays next to me in bed.  We have bath time, reading, and bed by 8 pm.  She tends to fall asleep pretty quick unless her brother is being silly and jumping around the bed.

She has three teeth, two on the bottom and one up top.  She also has three teeth that are so very close to breaking the gums.  All three which are on top.  With no sight of anymore bottom teeth.

Her favorite foods include green beans, ground beef, and grapes.  Food dislikes include mashed potatoes, apple sauce (not apples, just sauce), and tomatoes.

She loves reading books.  She especially loves when Owen is reading the book to her.  It is very adorable seeing these two laying together looking at books.  There are also a couple of puzzles that she enjoys pulling all of the pieces off and trying to figure out how to put them back together.  She has recently figured out how to climb on her brother's little trampoline and to bounce on it.  Her and Owen have fun chasing each other around the living room and hiding in his play house.

Over the past year she has visited Pappy Mark in Maryland for Labor Day and Memorial Day, she went to Babcia's house for Easter and her birthday.  She traveled to Pennsylvania in April to help Kristen after she broke her leg.  She also visited Pennsylvania to go camping and celebrate her birthday with all of her Pennsylvania family.  Another big trip included going to Florida for vacation.  In Florida she went to Sea World and to the beach in Ft. Lauderdale.  At the beach she loved playing in the sand (and tried eating it!)

I am amazed every day at all of the new things she is learning.  It is also amusing and adorable watching her and Owen play together.  Our next big milestone is for her to start walking.

Now enjoy some pictures from the last year.

The Big Latch On

Today is the first day of World Breastfeeding Week 2014!

Today was also The Big Latch On event.  I believe that they are hosting events tomorrow as well.  As of the time this post was written, there was a reported 5,562 babies/children latched on during the event.   (I will update tomorrow with the final count.  The record is 14,536.)

I went to the event in Monroe, NC.  It was at a pretty nice park, the same one we watched fireworks for Independence Day.  I had planned on staying after the event and packing a picnic, and letting the kids play on the playground. However, Mother Nature had other plans.  The whole time, it poured! Which I think limited the amount of moms that came out to the event.  Two of my friends were going to come but decided not to because of the rain.

There were a total of 9 nursing moms there, the children ranged from a few weeks old to 14 months old.  Owen enjoyed his time there despite being restricted to the pavilion.  We grabbed some cars for him to play with and him and another little boy raced them around the tables.  Charlotte also tried to join in on the fun.

Overall the event was a success.  The only things I would change would be to ask the moms what struggles they have overcome or still have, and have more breastfeeding conversation between the women.
